The 2017 Ford Explorer vs 2017 Ford Edge. What's Your Choice?
Serving Chattanooga, Nashville, and Dalton, TN
If you are in the market for an SUV, you’ve got choices. Two of the best are the 2017 Ford Edge and the 2017 Ford Explorer. The Edge is one of the most spacious two-row choices, and the Explorer is one of the most popular three-row rides on the market. While families are most likely to choose the Explorer, the Edge is a favorite with families and professionals who want a premium SUV.
Performance
Edge drivers can command one of a trio of performance-minded powertrains. The two-liter turbo four generates 245 horsepower and 275 lb.-ft. of torque. One Ecoboost edition even stops the engine at red lights, saving fuel during busy city driving. Stepping up, the 3.5-liter V-6 kicks out 280 horsepower and 250 lb.-ft. of torque. Ford adds a Sport mode for driving enthusiasts. The Sport edition goes even further with adaptive steering, standard all-wheel drive, and its own turbo V-6. From behind the wheel, drivers command 315 horsepower and 350 lb.-ft. of torque.
Ford also gives you three engine choices on the Explorer. Needing more power for its larger build, the Explorer offers a 290-horsepower V-6 engine. If you prefer, you can get the high-torque output of the fuel-saving four-cylinder turbo, a Limited standard. The Sport and Platinum have an Ecoboost V-6, giving you more horsepower and more torque from twin turbo technology.
Interior
If you want an SUV that’s already dressed for a night on the town, you’ll love the high-class level of interior furnishings in every Edge. Higher editions add leather and ventilated/heated front seats. With 40.6 inches of legroom, the backseat passengers can stretch out. One of the class leaders, the Edge has an extra-large 39-cu.ft. cargo hold. An EasyFold release makes it easy to increase that quickly to 73 cu.ft. Common conveniences on both the Edge and Explorer include push button start and a hands-free, power assist. You’ll also find today’s must-have dash tech such as a touchscreen, rearview camera, and Bluetooth streaming audio. Android Auto and Apple CarPlay expand the system's capability.
From soft armrests to ample bolstering, every aspect of the Explorer’s seating is designed to keep you comfortable. The standard 10-way power chairs seal the deal. For multi-contoured support, Ford now offers Active Motion seating. Heated and cooled front seats are standards on the Limited edition. Micro-perforated Nirvana leather is dressed with quilted inserts on the Platinum edition. A dual-panel moonroof adds the feeling of spaciousness. Only the Explorer’s class-exclusive PowerFold feature expands its hold quickly. In all, you’ll find 81 cu.ft. with the seats down.
Safety
The Explorer and Edge have both earned five-star safety ratings from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Both offer a forward collision safety system with a cautionary alert and automatic braking. You can also get a blind spot monitor and Ford's exclusive second-row inflatable seat belts. The Explorer is now offering a 12-sensor system that finds itself the right parking space and assists with maneuvering in and out of tight places. For extra safety, a new 180-degree front camera helps you watch for obstacles during slow forward maneuvers.
