The 2017 Ford Escape vs 2017 Ford Edge. What's Your Choice?

Serving Chattanooga, Nashville, and Dalton, TN

The 2017 Ford Escape is more affordable, and the 2017 Ford Edge is more stylish, but both are good choices. You can see how good when you examine their excellent safety record, their features list, and their capable performance statistics. Here's a guide to their similarities and differences.

Style and Size

The two SUVs put a heavy emphasis on comfort and convenience. Common standards include the Ford Sync touchscreen and a rearview camera. Edge shoppers will notice that the design is dressier. A panoramic sunroof and ambient lighting are at home in this refined cabin. The new Titanium trim level has elegant furnishings and advanced features. Of course, both crossovers seat five. The Escape offers a sizable passenger cabin with more than 98 cu.ft. of space. A lower curb weight helps it make more out of every engine’s power outlay. The shorter wheelbase also gives it a tighter turn circle. On the other hand, the Edge's cabin is larger, offering 113.9 cu.ft. Long-legged teens can stretch out in the backseat. When it comes to your travel needs, both offer cargo holds that can swallow up your family’s luggage. The Escape has 34 cu.ft. behind the second row, and the Edge boosts that to 39 cubes. If you fold the seats, the Escape offers 68 cu.ft. while the Edge offers 73 cubes. The hands-free, power-activated liftgate is available for easy access to the hold.

Performance

On the Escape, a 168-horsepower engine is standard, but the 179-horsepower EcoBoost four-cylinder is definitely a popular alternative. It kicks out 177 lb.-ft. for ample competitiveness on the highway. With either one you can enjoy good fuel economy. The Edge has a two-liter twin-scroll EcoBoost engine that Ford is making available on the Escape. With this engine, owners can tow up to 3,500 pounds. Whether under the hood of the Edge or Escape, it generates 245 horsepower and 275 lb.-ft. of torque. Edge shoppers can also opt for the even more powerful V-6. All of these powertrains are paired with a six-speed automatic transmission and front-wheel drive, although all-wheel drive is also available.

On both models, the Ecoboost powertrains save fuel with stop-start technology for city driving. Edge models also benefit from active grille shutters. In addition, specially-positioned aero ducts guide air across the wheel wells and along the side air curtains. Ford has also expanded its adaptive steering system to include both the Edge and the Escape. This available system adds low-speed agility and greater highway safety by electronically correcting for understeer and oversteer. Other Ford exclusives include standard torque vectoring control and curve control.

Safety

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has tested both of these models and awarded all five stars to the Edge and the Escape. Ford has expanded the crash avoidance features for the Escape, making its capabilities more on par with the Edge. For instance, the Escape is now eligible for the automatic park assist and the fatigued-driver alert system. It also offers automated braking with the forward collision warning and automatic steering assist with the lane watch. The Edge goes further, offering a 180-degree front bumper camera system that watches for obstacles during forward slow-speed maneuvers.
