The 2016 Ford F-150 vs 2016 Ram 1500. What's Your Choice?
Serving Chattanooga, Nashville, and Dalton, TN
Ford has earned Truck Brand of the Year from the critics at U.S. News and World Report. The 2016 F-150 was named the “Best Buy” in its class and the “Overall Best Buy” of all vehicles by Kelley Blue Book, the leading appraisal firm. Consumer Reports has named the F-150 as one of its “Top Ten Picks”. While the Ram pickup has an A rating in the annual Edmunds shopping guide, Ford F-150 also has earned that same A rating.
The 2016 Ford F-150 continues to outsell all of its rivals, including the Ram 1500. Does the Ford deserve its best-selling status? When the two are compared, we think you’ll agree that the Ford does indeed pull ahead of the Ram.
Fuel Economy
When it comes to the bottom line, Ford really does have your back. Ford trucks have been recognized for the best fuel economy of any fleet. It all starts with the F-150’s lightweight build. Military-grade aluminum has changed places with steel, reducing the weight without reducing the strength. By improving the weight-to-horsepower ratio, Ford trucks automatically became more efficient and more aerodynamic. In addition, certain 2016 Fords now offer an automatic stop-start feature to reduce fuel use in busy urban settings. Ecoboost technology helps Ford trucks do more while using less fuel. The twin-turbo V-6, for instance, drinks like a six cylinder engine but functions more like an eight-cylinder. Ram’s major concession to fuel economy is its pricey EcoDiesel.
Performance
If a truck can’t work hard, it’s not much of a truck. The lighter weight Ford is just as tough as its steel predecessors. In fact, it still holds the record for top towing capacity among non-heavy duty trucks, according to Kelley Blue Book. The V-8 tows up to 12,200 pounds. The Ford Ecoboost V-6 tows up to 8,500 pounds, delivering the kick of 420 lb.-ft. of torque. Ram’s V-8 maxes out at 10,640 pounds while its V-6 can tow 7,610 pounds. Ford has the obvious advantage here.
Safety
The 2016 Ford F-150 boasts all five stars from the NHTSA. The Ram 1500, however, lags behind with only four stars from the federal crash testers. The Ford Supercab and Supercrew editions earned “Top Safety Pick” from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety. This is quite rare for trucks and a big honor for Ford. Among the F-150's unique features, curve control keeps all four wheels engaged properly when taking winding roads at speed. Ford has a standard SOS post-crash system, a feature that’s available only on higher editions of the Ram 1500. Ford is offering a blind spot monitor, a feature that’s not found on the Ram 1500. You can also get a forward collision warning, which is not offered on Ram trucks. The F-150 also offers an exclusive 360-degree camera system that’s sure to benefit every driver who encounters a crowded worksite. Also, Ford's unique Pro Trailer Backup Assist makes backing up your trailer as simple as turning a knob left or right.
