If you need a full-size pickup for work or play, chances are you're choosing between the Ford F-150 and the Chevy Silverado 1500, both iconic American trucks. Here's how the 2018 versions of these long-time rivals stack up to one another.

Performance

With the Ford F-150, you can choose between a V6 with a 290-horsepower output, a less powerful but more efficient EcoBoost V6, a 395-hp V8, and a high-performance V8 exclusively offered in the Raptor trim, which provides 450 horses and 510 feet of torque along with tailored off-roading capabilities. In the Silverado, options include a 285-hp V6 and two V8s that offer either 355 or 420 horses depending on trim.

The Ford F-150 has a maximum towing capacity of 13,200 pounds, better than any other pickup, and can haul up to 3,270 pounds. The Silverado 1500 maxes out at 12,500 pounds for towing and 2,250 for payload.

Fuel Economy

Despite its formidable engine selection, the Ford F-150 also leads in fuel economy thanks to its lightweight aluminum construction. If you opt for the V6 engine with rear-wheel drive and automatic transmission, you'll get an EPA-estimated 20 city/26 highway miles per gallon. That's a better rating than even the hybrid version of the Silverado, which gets 18 city/24 highway mpg. In addition, an even more efficient diesel version of the Ford F-150 will be released later in 2018.

Safety

While both vehicles have earned a five-star overall crash test rating from the National Highway and Traffic Safety Administration, only the F-150 is a Top Safety Pick+ of the Insurance Institute on Highway Safety (IIHS). The Silverado received a Marginal score from the IIHS in the front impact crash test.

Both vehicles offer a standard rearview camera and driver assistance features including front and rear parking sensors, forward collision warning, lane keep assist, and automatic forward braking. The Silverado adds a safety alert seat, but the F-150 can also be upgraded with blind spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go technology, a 360-degree camera system, and pre-collision warning with pedestrian detection.
