2016 Ford Explorer
Serving Chattanooga, Nashville, and Dalton
Fresh from a Kelley Blue Book (KBB) 5-Year Cost to Own award, the 2016 Ford Explorer is getting a lot of props for its composed handling, powerful engine options, and respectable fuel efficiency. Representing the fifth production cycle of the template, the current Explorer represents the vehicle’s recent focus on more family-friendly, sedan-like driving dynamics—a far cry from the more puritanical approach to what a sports utility vehicle is supposed to be. The 2016 Explorer has five trims: base, XLT, Limited, Sport, and Platinum.

Performance
The base, XLT, and Limited trims of the 2016 Ford Explorer are powered by a 3.5-liter V6 engine, which pumps out 290 horsepower and 255 foot-pounds of torque. Customers who go with any of the three aforementioned trims can stick with the standard front-wheel drive (FWD) layout or go with the Intelligent Four-Wheel Drive (4WD) system for better traction. The upper-level Sport and Platinum trims have 3.5-liter EcoBoost twin-turbocharged V6, which, besides providing more power (365 horsepower and 350 foot-pounds of torque), boosts fuel economy. Plus, both vehicles come with 4WD. There’s also a third engine option: a smaller and less powerful 2.3-liter EcoBoost turbocharged inline four-cylinder engine, albeit with the FWD as the only available drivetrain. Each engine is paired with a six-speed automatic transmission with SelectShift technology for more driver control over gear shifting. Depending on the powertrain configuration, the 2016 Explorer can achieve up to 19 miles per gallon (mpg) in the city and 28 mpg on the highway, plus a maximum towing capability of 5,000 lbs.
Interior
Designed as a mid-size crossover SUV, the 2016 Ford Explorer provides a passenger volume of 151.6 cubic feet and three rows of seats: both enough to accommodate up to seven passengers. The front seats include a multi-way power-adjustable driver’s seat and split-folding designs on the second- and third-row seats to expand the amount of already cargo space. As you go further up in trim, more standard features—such as leather upholstery, heating and cooling capability on the seats, and front passenger seat power adjustability—are also present.

Features
Standard comfort and convenience features include remote keyless entry, rear HVAC, speed control, steering wheel-mounted controls, and a 180-degree back-up camera. Some of the upper-level trims also get an auto-dimming rearview mirror, navigation system, automatic temperature control, garage-door transmitter, and heating capability on the steering wheel. With the Limited, Sport, and Platinum in particular, the regular six-speaker stereo system is replaced with a premium 12-speaker set-up.
Safety
For protection in the event of an auto collision, the 2016 Ford Explorer is fitted with dual front impact and dual side impact airbags for the driver and front passenger, a knee airbag for the driver, and side curtain airbags for all rows of seats. Also included are brake assist, anti-lock braking system, and electronic stability and traction control systems. Other features, like adaptive cruise control and forward collision warning, are available for addition on select trims.
