Since 2000, the Ford Escape has wowed customers as one of the best-selling small crossover SUVs in the United States. Now in its third generation of production, the 2016 Escape continues to combine sedan-like driving dynamics with sports-utility sheet metal, while providing a wealth of engine choices, sporty handling, and lots of interior space. It is split into S, SE, and Titanium trims.

Performance

The base-level S relies on a 2.5-liter inline 4-cylinder (I4) engine—which produces 168 horsepower at 6,000 RPM and 170 lb-ft of torque at 4,500 RPM—for power. The workhorse on the other trims is a turbocharged 1.6-liter EcoBoost I4 with 178 horsepower at 5,700 RPM and 184 lb-ft of torque at 2,500 RPM. Each engine is hooked to a 6-speed automatic transmission, which has SelectShift technology for enabling you to simulate a manual gearbox feel with the gear shifting. Although front-wheel drive is standard on the 2016 Escape, you do have the option of getting Ford’s Intelligent 4-Wheel Drive System for enhanced traction—especially when driving on slippery surfaces—on the SE or Titanium. Also optional on the two aforementioned trims is a 2.0-liter EcoBoost I4 with an increased output over the other engine choices (240 horsepower at 5,500 RPM and 270 lb-ft of torque at 3,000 RPM). Fuel economy on the 2016 Escape is maximized at 23 mpg in the city and 31 mpg on the highway.

Interior

A five-seater, the 2016 Ford Escape comes with 98.1 cubic feet of passenger volume. Cargo space is measured at up to 67.8 cubic feet from the front seats and with the rear seats folded down. Upgrading to the SE adds 10-way power adjustability on the driver’s seat. If you choose the Titanium, the power adjustability is extended to the front passenger seat, and an integrated memory system is added on the driver’s seat. Additionally, the Titanium is the only Escape trim with leather-trimmed seats, front-seat heating capability, and a leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift knob.

Features

At the base level, the 2016 Ford Escape comes with a remote start system, alloy wheels, a smart charging USB port, Ford’s voice-activated SYNC communications system that includes a 4.2-inch color LCD screen, and a six-speaker stereo system. Added on the SE are a 6-month SiriusXM Satellite Radio subscription and fog lights. On the Titanium, the six-speaker system is replaced by a 10-speaker Sony system with HD Radio; the communications system is upgraded to SYNC 3 next-generation technology with an 8-inch color LCD touchscreen (in place of the 4.2-inch display) and an additional smart charging USB port; and it gets a remote start system, push-button engine start, universal garage door opener, reverse sensing system, dual-zone automatic climate control, auto-dimming rearview mirror, hands-free foot-activated liftgate, and 18-inch alloy wheels (in place of the 17-inch ones).

Safety

The 2016 Ford Escape’s airbag system consists of a driver’s knee, dual front impact, dual side impact, and dual side curtain airbags. Also on the vehicle are Ford’s AdvanceTrac electronic stability control system for optimum performance in less-than-favorable driving conditions, traction control for aiding traction, torque vectoring control to help reduce understeer, and all-wheel power disc brakes with ABS for supreme stopping ability.
