The 2018 Ford Mustang vs 2018 Chevrolet Camaro. What's Your Choice?
Serving Chattanooga, Nashville, and Dalton
Two nameplates stand out when it comes to the American symbol of sport and muscle cars. Those two names are, of course, Mustang and Camaro. Ford and Chevrolet have been throwing these two models at each other for decades, and there's no clear winner when the Mustang and Camaro step into the ring. It's really a matter of what the buyer desires most and what should be expected in terms of performance, passenger comfort, and all-purpose driving habits.
The 2018 Ford Mustang appears to come out a bit ahead of the Camaro in the areas of drivability, trim choices and package options, and value obtained from the choice of powertrain. The Camaro is more of a sporty muscle car than is the Mustang, but it's not quite as practical of a choice when it comes to everyday commuting. Neither car offers much in terms of roominess, but the Mustang is perhaps better designed to get four people around town than its competitor from Chevrolet.
Driver Experience
Handling is superb on the 2018 Ford Mustang. It takes corners with ease and is very quiet and composed at freeway speeds. It doesn't put out the throaty roar from its V8 engine that one would expect in a muscle car, but of course that's easily solved by going to the aftermarket parts store. The Mustang is a tiny bit smaller than the Camaro, and it's easier to park in tight spaces. It's also a bit lighter even when equipped with the V8 engine, so response from the steering wheel is better than just about any other model in this segment. The 2018 Camaro packs a good punch when the gas pedal is pressed, but it has a sportier feel at any speed, making it more of a performance vehicle and less of a commuter.
Engine and Performance
Absent from the 2018 Mustang lineup is the choice of the V6 engine, but buyers need not be alarmed. The 2.3L EcoBoost inline-4 engine is more than capable, putting out a bit more than last year's version rated at 310 horsepower. The Coyote V8 is a 5.0L V8 that produces upwards of 440 horsepower and 400 lb-ft of torque. Acceleration is great with the V8. Expect just 4.7 seconds to tick off the clock to get from zero to 60 mph. The 2018 Chevrolet Camaro can be purchased with a four-cylinder, six-cylinder, or supercharged V8, and the latter puts out a whopping 455 horsepower. There's also a 6.2L V8 available, and yes, there's even more horsepower with this engine. There's also terrible gas mileage, so those who want that practicality mentioned earlier will probably be drawn to the Mustang and it?s more efficient V8 engine.
Trim Levels
Both modes come in a variety of trims, and not all engines are available with each. However, the 2018 Mustang lower trims work just fine with most buyers as they feature the choice of multiple exterior base tones and stripe configurations, automatic headlights, LED taillights, and a leather-wrapped steering wheel. The Sync Voice Control system is standard even on the base trim. The 2018 Chevrolet Camaro is available in six trims, but the 2SS and ZL1 are much pricier than the uplevel Mustang versions. Buyers will pay more for added performance, and again, practicality suffers.
The 2018 Ford Mustang carries on the tradition that started more than 50 years ago. As times changed, so did the vehicle, but it's still a Mustang. Check it out today by calling our dealership and scheduling a test drive. We think you'll find it to be a more everyday coupe than the 2018 Camaro, and it has all the amenities you need and then some.
